Cassian Venn
House Glass’s prefect, who believes an orderly lie is kinder than an unbearable truth.
Identity
Fifty-eight. Public prefect for House Glass, once an emergency mediator. An invented character, not a portrait of a real official.
Belief
Venn believes that shared narratives prevented Vesper from tearing itself apart after North Gate. He regards uncertainty as a resource the secure can afford and the frightened cannot.
Power and limits
He controls record access and can request temporary communications restrictions. He cannot directly command the canopy crew, compel the other Houses' votes, or erase isolated physical copies.
Temptation offered
He gives Mara access to a reconstruction of Eli's last day. His offer is emotionally precise: stop making everyone suffer for an answer she can receive privately. The reconstruction contains some authentic fragments and a crucial invented reassurance.
Human contradiction
He remembers the evacuation's casualties. His motive is not a love of suffering; it is the conviction that only he should decide which suffering people can bear.
Defeat
The ledger exposes his signatures and strips his account of exclusivity. He survives to face inquiry. His final argument, that disclosure can also hurt people, remains worth answering even though it cannot excuse what he did.
Voice
“People do not live inside facts, Mara. They live inside what facts allow them to survive.”
Alternative explanations
This is invented narrative material, not a factual explanation of real-world events.
Counterarguments
Character beliefs are not automatically true within the story. Competing interpretations remain part of the drama.
Contradictory evidence
Not applicable to real-world evidence. Internal contradictions are identified in the story bible.

Story relevance & development
Original fictional development for THE DOME. No character or House represents a real person or institution.
